Photography and the Mac (part 2) on this episode of The Mac Attack. Victor Cajiao (Typical Mac User / Typical Shutterbug) joins me to discuss sharing and printing your photos and some addition tools (HDR and geotagging) and web resources that we both find helpful.

(behind-the-scenes show note: I apologize for how fast I was speaking during some parts of the show. That might of been a two coffee morning.)

Snow Leopard tips, tricks and hints on this episode of The Mac Attack. It's a quick episode but I bet you'll find at least one tip about Snow Leopard you didn't know about.

Please write a review on iTunes
Thank you!

Snow Leopard tips, tricks and hints:

Visit the show web site at themacattack.tv for show notes and links to the software, hardware, and products mentioned during the podcast.

The Snow Leopard install disc can be used on a blank hard drive. Leopard doesn't need to be installed first.

Rearrange user created mail folders in the mail app. Previously we were stuck looking at those folders in alphabetical order. Now just drag the folders into any order.

option click Sound menu icon (speaker icon) to select input and output audio devices.

option click Sync menu icon to get more detailed sync info.

option click AirPort menu icon shows all sorts of info about the current wireless connection.

option click Bluetooth menu adds 'Open Bluetooth Diagnostics Utility'

option click Battery menu icon shows battery health

option click Time Machine menu icon changes 'Enter Time Machine' to 'Browse Other Time Machine Disks.

Zoom screen while using "Screen Recording" in QuickTime X (zoom screen: control+scroll wheel or trackpad)

Show date in menu bar select via 'Date & Time' preference pane.

Minimize application windows into application dock icon set via 'Dock' preference pane

System Preferences icon shows list of Preference Panes when right clicked (control clicked)

Booting into safe mode now has a progress bar as it verifies the hard drive

When "Screen Sharing" with another Mac, hitting command tab to switch apps will switch the apps on the remote computer, not the one you're sitting in front of.

The Mac Attack will be back with the release of Snow Leopard (if it's actually released this week). Either way there will be a a new show out by next weekend.

Backup'09 on this episode of The Mac Attack. On the very first episode of The Mac Attack I spoke about backing up and a lot has changed (like a choice of online backup services). Its good being able to talk about backup apps and services that have really proven themselves over the last 4 yrs or so...

Cyber security and internet safety on this episode of The Mac Attack.

Please review the show:
Write a review on iTunes
Thank you!

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Even though you may be up on cyber security, think about your kids, or your parents, or even where you work. Think about the people in your life that may not be as computer savvy as you....

Cyber security and internet safety tips:

  • Install all system updates from Apple
  • Never shop online, unless you are familiar with the retailer you're dealing with
  • Avoid Phishing scams by simply not trusting any financial advice or warning sent in e-mail form. If your bank needs information from you, they will call you, not ask you to e-mail them or fill out an online form
  • Don't: create passwords using personal information or information someone could guess
  • Don't: create a password using words in a dictionary, no matter the language
  • Never use the default password or a common password
  • Talk to your children about their use of the computer and discuss any possible dangers they may encounter online
  • Discuss and set guidelines or rules for computer use with your children. Post these rules by the computer as a reminder
  • Keep the computer in a common area of your home, so that children’s activities can be easily monitored
  • Limit time allotted on the computer - watch to see if your child is withdrawing from friends and family
  • Use the Internet with your children
  • Know who your children's online friends are and supervise their chat areas
  • Consider routing your child’s email into your own email account first in order to screen any unwanted email messages
  • Mac OS X parental controls let you manage your child's use of the computer, the applications and the Internet. - parental controls can be found in system preferences.
  • Back up important files and store them in a secure place in a different location than your computer

Apple adapters:
For all current Macs DVI to VGA
Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini DVI to Video Adapter
MacBook and iMac Mini-DVI to Video Adapter
MacBook Air Video Adapters

Once you have your computer connected you'll want to set your computer to video mirroring mode via the Display Preference pane.

The simplest way to get sound from your computer to your flat screen tv is to use an 1/8'' stereo audio cable (You can tell it's stereo because of the two stripes around the connector). The ends, or connectors look like what you would see on a pair of headphones. The 1/8" jack on your computer is usually marked by a headphones graphic.

To get audio to your standard tv - you will probably need to use a 1/8" audio jack to rca adapter... Here's an example 1/8" Mini Stereo to RCA

From the Mac Core web site: "Corey and Katie sat down with Steve Stanger of The Mac Attack and devoted a special podcast to the topic of becoming Apple Certified. This is a little different show for us, but we’ve gotten a ton of listener feedback on this topic and thought it warranted its own show. Steve and Corey talk about the reasons they choose to become Apple Certified, talk about the reasons to become certified, the different types of certifications Apple offers and answers listener questions about the certification process."

- Repair disk with Disk Utility.
- Use Cocktail, Onyx, or MainMenu to to repair disk permissions, run maintenance scripts, clean the user and system caches.

Fixing a "stuck" 'Automatically reduce brightness' setting:
1) Manually edit the plist file for PowerManagement.  It’s located at /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist.  Under Custom Profile -> AC Power (and you have to do it under the Battery Power one, too if you have that set up), create a Child (if it doesn’t exist already) named “Display Sleep Uses Dim and set it to Number and the value to 0.  That seemed to do the trick on my iMac.
2) If you still have issues, the system may be ignoring the plist setting.  You can create a little one-line Applescript and dump it on the desktop to run whenever you need it.  Just put this line in it (but, be aware that even if you save it as run-only, your admin password can still be seen if someone opens up the file as text): do shell script “sudo pmset halfdim 0 password “ with administrator privileges

This weeks "The Mac Attack" is all about keeping your Mac running it's best (and you don't even have to buy it sneakers). I discuss OS X maintenance along with answering listener email and more.

"The Mac Attack" finally has it's very own domain - www.themacattack.us - there is no need to change anything on your part. All old links and feeds still work and will continue to do so.

Welcome to "The Mac Attack" (no it has nothing to do with fast food cravings). This first episode focuses on backing up your data. You wouldn't believe how many people don't. You back up, don't you???

Here are the links to the sites I spoke about on the show:

Retrospect back up software - http://www.dantz.com
Mac.com - http://www.mac.com

Full system backup software:
Carbon Copy Cloner - http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
SuperDuper - http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html

Next week we will delve into the world of shareware, freeware, and must have software.

(Note: Please don't judge the show by the audio quality of this first episode. I didn't realize that the audio is not up to par when listened to on quality speakers. I think the subject matter is important if you can get past the audio on this first episode. The audio on the second episode is much, much better. UPDATE 8/20/05- I went back to the original multi-track recording and tried to EQ out some of the noise and popping. It is a little better than the original release )
